Like many of those who have inspired Philip, Stanley Spencer's artworks contain strong dream-like, visionary images. Many of his paintings have a strange perspective, with figures in unusual places and situations.

He made a living by painting landscapes, and would go out in all weathers, pushing his cart of art materials to find suitable scenes.
